Siam Commercial Bank Talat Noi: The First Ever Thai Bank

 

Like many ancient civilizations that began along rivers, the pioneer of Thailand’s financial industry also found its roots beside the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok — Siam Commercial Bank (SCB) Talat Noi.

SCB, the oldest Thai commercial bank, established its first branch in the historic district of Talat Noi in Samphanthawong, a bustling area once central to trade and commerce.

The Beginning of a Thai Local Bank

In the early days of international trade, Thailand’s financial sector was dominated by foreign banks. Initially, these banks operated through large local stores in Bangkok, before setting up formal establishments in 1888.

Prince Mahisara Rachaharuthai, then Minister of Finance, spearheaded the idea of a local bank through a trial venture known as the “Book Club.” It began operations on October 4, 1904, within three blocks of the Finance Ministry building. For his pioneering efforts, Prince Mahisara Rachaharuthai is now honored as the “Father of Thai Banking.”

Two years later, on January 30, 1906, King Rama V granted a royal charter, officially transforming the venture into Siam Commercial Bank. This event marked the birth of Thailand’s first commercial bank. SCB’s initial logo featured the emblem of the state and bore the inscription “Established by Royal Assent,” a distinction that made SCB the only bank allowed to display this phrase.

An Elegant Financial Landmark

The Talat Noi branch of Siam Commercial Bank was the very first among what would become over 600 branches across the country. It was designed by Italian architect Annibale Rigotti, who was also noted for his work on the renowned Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall.

SCB’s first building, perched on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, was completed in 1908. This three-story structure was built in the Beaux-Arts classical architectural style, showcasing a lavish Western design adapted to a tropical setting. It served as SCB’s headquarters until operations were later moved to Phetchaburi Road (Chidlom) and then to its current location on Ratchadaphisek Road (Ratchayothin Intersection).

Though no longer the main office, the Talat Noi branch remains operational. It has undergone regular renovations, not only to preserve its architectural elegance but also to ensure customer safety. In 1982, the building was honored by the Association of Siamese Architects under Royal Patronage for outstanding conservation of art and architecture.

Now over a century old, the SCB Talat Noi branch feels like a step back in time. Its museum-like atmosphere and vintage teller counters stand as reminders of the role Thailand’s first local bank played in shaping the nation’s financial landscape.
